[MLD013] Good Natured Threat – "Short Stories EP"

Melodica, the young Slovak netlabel (it was founded in the early months of 2010 and by Kaizels RSSdown) presents release number 13, the interesting " Short Stories EP " proposed Good Natured by Canadian Threat . The duo, consisting of Mark and Lara Hjorthoy and from Vancouver, was founded with the intent to explore and experiment with new sound, mixing the different genres of music with the ultimate aim to relax the listener by offering this kind of "dreamy- electronic-pop-sound. " "Beacons", the first track (which also reached the semifinals of the People Music Awards) is a sleek and soft ballad where the echoes of guitar and vocals are mixed with electronics and reverse decorated soft tabla creating a kind of indian-trip-hop. "Until We Have Faces" increase the metronome tempo by relying on a steady rhythm of drums and bass and creeping in atmospheres almost detective, a mysterious night in pursuit of ways dampened by a rain just fell from a dark sky (placing in the meantime, some questions about fame and success). But the climax comes with "Short Stories", 12 minutes of absolute pleasure sound. A beautiful guitar intro and vocals surrounded by silence until the entry of feline bass that drags us into the roundness of a rhythmic warm and full, really good drum sound ... I wish this would never end ... Mark groove plays his guitar with wah-wah and delay as a sensitive and creative child. The song lands after six minutes in a central area where an angelic harp takes us in an atmosphere scented with Pink Floyd wide pants rapper then return to the starting point, ie silence, guitar and voice. Absolutely a spectacular flight full of dense emotions. Of note is the good work done by melodies that give us a full release of two-page PDF with information, photos, links and text. And believe me, sometimes these little tricks are good and unfortunately neglected by many netlabels.

[totokoko 016] irifune - "loomur"

The netlabel totokoko born in Japan in early 2010 with the intention to expand its focus not only on music but also painting, photography and visual arts in general. In this sixteenth release totokoko presents irifune , artist active since 2006 and from Sapporo, northern Japan, in collaboration with the label already " totokoko christmas compilation.
" loomur " is a delicate album which contains six tracks (plus a secret), all equipment except two (Anxiety in the way back, Hello Work) that are sung, or rather, whispered. You can indulge in childish atmosphere rocked by the vibe of "Broken new toy," grandmother on chime with colorful squeaky rocking chair sitting next to or on the marimba in 3 / 4 of "Depression", strange ethnic crossroads between Africa and Japan. The sad and mournful "Song of (Do not Fear) the reap" leads through a slow march towards the most intense song of the album, "Cinematic Twin Leaf." Rarefied, in eternal suspension, as long pauses in breathing during meditation, with excellent orchestrated minimalism. Irifune suggests great talent as composer and rare sensitivity. We look forward to future work.

[42 Records/24] Mamavegas - "Icon Land"

La collana digitale "24" dell'etichetta " 42 Records " ci presenta un'ennesima best indie band of the Italian landscape, these are the Mamavegas. Designed by the brothers Francesco and Daniele Petrosino, are transformed in the current band (with Andrea Memeo, Emanuele Mancini, Matthew Portelli, Marco Bonini) after moving to Rome and to have made different and decisive changes in the line-up. Just nine months after the previous " This Is the Day! I See... " released by 42 Records always here to get this wonderful "land Icon" small post-folk-rock gem. The opening is for the sinuous "Felt" which immediately brings me back to certain sounds dear to Barbagallo, probably in the likeness of some voice. Mamavegas damage again proved to be excellent musicians with an above average creativity in developing this track a singular and elegant arrangements that (especially in the final) report to certain sounds "British" (Beatles, Verve, etc). "Safe Machines" smells of spring, bike rides, with her beautiful voice in the warm presence, and a central gripping instrumental part. The scant six minutes of "Fortune" (Icon land), Ep-bolt, take us a long elaborate structure of singular taste, each new change is accompanied by its predecessor with naturalness, as if everything had already been written in an ancient book of perfect music. Another feature not to neglect the Mamavegas is certainly a wise harmonizing voices and choirs, well represented in the semi-country "Yes we run."
The ep ends with the twilight and whispered "Loyal", leaving a pleasant feeling in my body that I will listen again to all the songs several times. I apparently live Mamavegas know infuse a lot of energy, so if you happen to find them in your area do not miss it.

FEW QUIET PEOPLE - "Promo Sampler 2011"

tasty preview of some tracks from artists that will be produced in 2011 by Polish netlabel QUIET FEW PEOPLE , founded in 2009 by Wojciech Krasowski and Maciej Nejman with the intent to drive certain sounds in the direction of ambient drone-pop. The opening and closing of the library is entrusted to the Polish composer Krzysztof Zimmermann that "Waiting for the answer" 1 and 2, a delight to listen with two minimal electro gems. Tomasz Bednarczyk (Wroclaw, Poland) has instead "The Sketch Pt 2", a delicate composition which sits on a floating electronic, severe central arches and touched a piano with innocent timidity. Considerable noisy sample of "An arc 5" of Japanese (trapiantato a Brighton)  Yu Miyashita . Loop ingegnosamente disordinati e sbalzi di dinamiche improvvisi rendono questa composizione assolutamente originale e difficile da dimenticare. Il violinista e compositore polacco  Stefan Wesolowski  ci omaggia invece con la struggente e commovente "Shipyard", uno dei momenti sentimentalmente più toccanti dell'intera raccolta. Miti e seducenti sono anche le tracce glitch-ambient presentate da   Szymon Kaliski  e dell'italiano con–cetta ,   quieti viaggi onirici da assaporare comodamente seduti in temperate and soothing bubbles. "Alone with everyone" to iN (one of the founders of the label) actually opens with surprising aggression and then dissolve in rural atmospheres illuminated from a dazzling full moon. "Lost" of the guitar-noise-experimental Chinese Wong King devilishly intense experience are contained in two quick minutes. Impressive seven minutes abundant "ULN" to Nejma a noisy electro-long suite in which it is not difficult to indulge his growing and impressive drama. "Promo sampler 2011" non contiene momenti minori, tutte le tracce contenute sono di assoluto valore e il loro spaziare disinvolto da sfumature ambient-glitch-drone a momenti più estremi vicino al noise conferiscono alla raccolta varietà e ricchezza. Ora non resta che attendere i lavori completi di questi sensibili artisti.

[trip.10] THE SPHERICAL MINDS - "transpheres"

Taking a panoramic tour of my favorite netlabels ho trovato questo affascinante album che distrattamente avevo trascurato circa un mese fa, al tempo della sua uscita. Si tratta di " transpheres " di THE SPHERICAL MINDS , rilasciato dalla belga Tripostal. Il progetto nasce in Francia nel 2001 dall'unione di Paul Chantereau, Valentin Chantereau, Mathieu Maestracci e Clement Vullion con l'intento di esplorare nuove sonorità unendo strumenti acustici quali violoncello e pianoforte ad atmosfere tipicamente trip-hop-dub. Il risultato di questo esperimento sono due album rilasciati rispettivamente nel 2003 ("De ira", Thundering Records) e nel 2005 ("Fern", Carte Postal Records). Così dopo sei anni di assenza ecco tornare these spherical and intelligent minds with five new songs that manage to combine with seductive ease progressive structures, components, dub and ambient, post rock and Latin rhythms without ever overdoing it and maintaining control over every element, giving the album a homogeneity and a sound very original. The initial opening with the long suite "Fautless Time Coming" (12 '), a piece that glosses over different atmospheres with poignant intensity changes and dynamics, preparing the listener for a fluent and exciting journey. The sinuous "Coda Music" touches on the use of shades of dub effects in the initial rhythm, which shortly after South American flavors differ in supporting the entire first half on a wonderful piano dialogue to end with a second party running on a low pace with moog only "underground" of guitar and rhythmic distortions. The Spherical Minds have a capacity to unite the different influences that I try to use an adjective that I do not use hardly ever: genius. The touching "Raising in the city" get through with the natural fluency of a French pop song intro early 80s (remember Lio?) To a melancholy piano melody, vaguely post-rock with ease slowing the progress of the piece for then finish it bravely with two minutes of sound loops in slowly fading. "Kokkola transition" instantly caught with his seductive and sinuous rhythm in 3 / 4, the female voice (in reverse? Cut?) Absolutely fantastic and reckless distortion on the snare (at first I thought that I had melted the headphones) and then finishing with four minutes of pure aimed dub and avant-garde. "Life (vest) under your seat" resumed the conversation started in prog opener ... 10 minutes ranging from dark trip hop, delicate guitar arpeggios, electronic pianos intimidated and balanced. The Spherical Minds are not afraid to be daring and give birth to a full album, creative and complete. A magic box where you can find everything you want. Thanks.

[hpr045] Scarm - "Several Minutes Of The Man"

Curiosando tra i post del  LiveJournal of young band from St. Petersburg of Scarmato (no member over twenty years) I find that it took about 20 months to create this effective " Several Minutes Of The Man " released by Canadian HAPPY PUPPY RECORDS . A good technical capacity of the three members of the band (guitar, bass and drums) and a heavy dose of youthful energy and expressiveness make this album quite effective and full of ideas. And it is just guitar and drums to strike up the song structure (which many times seem very successful improvisations and then resumed for new touch-up) and talking amicably within them. I can feel a great feeling among the members of the band that defines this album as the narrative of a day is not common to any person. In fact, to celebrate the beginning of the opening day is entrusted to "the South late, great texture on a guitar performance with a significant middle-rock crescendo central extremely aggressive. The sounds of the drums remind me a lot of Nirvana "In Utero". The Scarmato know walk with ease over a variety of genres creating tempo changes and dynamics within the tracks, just listen "Desierto Florecente" soundtrack of a short film in black and white set among cactus and lizards. I have the impression that the Russian band spend a lot of time to rape their instruments to improvise and have fun for hours, reaching a record times were mental confusion and hallucinations (hear the final minutes of "Der Nachauseweg" and "La Fabrique du Silence" or the 8-minute "Creperum" long and crazy trip to more dimensions). There is certainly some troubles still hanging in the music of Scarmato (which is also well represented dall'angosciante art-work), probably still in the throes of post-adolescent crisis annoying but certainly make this "Several Minutes Of The Man" a great impro-rock-album.

[sec056] Azoora - "Instrumentals Vol 1"

continue the bond that lasts for several years now between Azoora and 23 Seconds . This is the sixth release the band's catalog offers the netlabel of Gothenburg (Sweden). In this " Instrumentals vol.1 " the Azoora compete in a test instrument signed by the multi-instrumentalist John Purcell (who happens to be on the staff of the label as a producer) and drummer Ben Cochrane, thus abandoning For once, the warm and sensual voice of singer Paul Loader. The result is seven tracks from the fast pace, as the prima "Balls out", con un thrilling-piano ossessivo e un synth  ritmicamente impazzito che colorano l'intero pezzo.
"Cirque du Lune" è un malinconico brano suddiviso in due parti in cui  il piano, dal vago sapore di un  dimenticato film francese dei primi anni 70, rimane nuovamente il perno centrale, dando l'appoggio a svariati interventi chitarristici e a lamenti sonori contorti. "23 seconds to love" è forse il punto in cui sento di più la mancanza della voce di Paul; ad essere sincero in alcuni momenti mi canticchiavo mentalmente una linea melodica perfetta per la timbrica vocale del cantante qui assente. Flauti che disegnano melodie  in un luogo desolato in mezzo al deserto in cui Morricone and the Smiths you look straight in the eye before any duel. One of the best episodes of the album. The acrobatic "Sleepdrone" remains constantly on a live wire waiting for an imminent explosion or a fall that never arrives. "Floating in the Sun" runs on a carefree rhythm semi-hard 70 years and only in this track comes a distant echoes of human voices, perhaps to create a subtle link to the next album Azoora in full training that will come to us in ' summer 2011.

Last week I took the course together with other friends of Angelo Gorlini Watercolor Master, this is the work done during the first lesson. How many watercolorists know, the Master invites artists to paint with total freedom, and avoid going too much on detail, but instead of giving free rein to their imagination. Generally we work drawing inspiration from photographs of various subjects, and never run preparatory drawings in pencil, instead of starting to paint directly on the white paper. When I started the course I was shocked and everything seemed hard, today I learned to appreciate this method and I do not think I could paint in a different way. Thanks Angelo!

[LBN007] Nick Rivera - "Happy song is a happy song"

Back The nice netlabel after two months of absence from the scene net-audio. Had left us with a release of electro-hip-hop-sophisticated, the excellent " And you do not know what I think " of Neeva and now opens the new year with this much more hued acoustic EP titled "Happy song is a happy song ", the debut solo multi-instrumentalist Cagliari Nick Rivera (aka Michael Sarti). Nick, who has collaborated with Franklin Delano past and Bron Y Aur, began this project in London, where among other things he made the sympathetic video for "Horn Y Orgy" directed by Roddy Clark and Simon Jarvis, then going on at the end of 2010 here in Italy, where we also took a good live activity. The EP opens with the delicate guitar arpeggio of "Renee Luise, stroll through the countryside at night in the company of small and intimidated aliens in search of communication, where among other things a step and a myriad of acoustic instruments are taken hand in a slow and steady crescendo. The song that gives the ep, with its playful rhythms overlap, outlining well the compositional style of the musician Cagliari, who likes to progressively add new layers of sound in its tracks, lending a slight sense of hope and communion. In "Butter in my head," whispered the voice with the flavor of the first awakening is initially accompanied by a religious in a semi and a pizzicato cello ... I close my eyes and I am in a tiny room by the dim light in the company of Nick and his friends musicians, including a few glasses of good wine and cigarette haze that creates the right atmosphere needed. The song then evolves into a slow march from the 70's synth and horns.
In my opinion, the most successful episode of this EP (with mastering done by Bill Gautier in London), in which Rivera shows to know to approach the usual and unusual acoustic instruments to electronic sounds with more natural taste and creating a sound much originale.
